Entry 2
I’m going slightly off tangent here, sorry… but it is a thought that has stuck in my head now for a couple of weeks.
I think mainly because I am a father now to a wreck-it Ralph of a son who is into everything and hasn’t got the foggiest idea of what danger is… typical boy I guess.
The old saying “It’s like riding a bike, you never forget”, has been rattling around as I teach him how to ride a bike. The problem is, if you stop doing something for a long enough time, you will forget.
I used to be able to play the guitar. I learnt how to play ‘One by Metallica’ when I was 6 years old. I remember doing it, I remember playing it. But, considering I haven’t picked up a guitar in over 2 decades, for the life of me I can’t remember how to play the guitar.
AI or Artificial Intelligence has taken the world by storm, understandably. It has made life so much easier, I use it every day. If I need help coding a particular feature or want to know the answer to a bizarre question, I ask ChatGPT. I no longer ask Google… I find there is too much ‘fluff’ on Google at times.
Having said that, I intentionally step away from the AI world when I realise I use it too much. I can feel myself getting lazy and not ‘thinking for myself’. Even for simple tasks like helping my partner redesign her website, I would ask ChatGPT to provide the copy instead of thinking about the copy myself, conducting the research and testing it.
The annoying thing is, after ChatGPT provides the copy, I end up changing it anyway!
The reason why I question - ‘is AI making us more stupider?’ - follows the same lines as above, ‘use it or lose it’. Overuse of ChatGPT means we are not thinking for ourselves, we are not problem solving with our own intellect that has the capability to solve the problems. We use ChatGPT because it’s ‘easier’ and more ‘convenient’.
